This Clan is traditionally desended from Diarmid, the Fingalian Hero. In the 13th century, Archibald Campbell obtained the Lordship of Lochow through his marriage with the daughter of the King's Treasurer. Sir Colin Campbell was knighted in 1280 and from him the Chiefs of Argyll took their patronymic of MacCalein Mòr, the Son of Great Colin. After Flodden, at which battle the Chief and his son were killed and with the exception of one who was executed for his part in Monmouth's Rebellion, the Campbell chiefs led their Clan to ever greater success, achieved more by statemanship than by war. The Argylls were leading figures in the Scottish Reformation but, for their part in the infamous Massacre of Glencoe, the Campbells were generally detested in the Highlands. The name, in Gaelic, means "Wry-Mouth". It may refer either to a physical trait or to an untrustworthy character
