Carolina Tartan

The Carolina tartan was designed to emphasize the historical connection between the Carolinas and the Stuart kings, Charles I and II from whom the Carolinas were named.
The design is based on a fragment of Royal Stewart Tartan worn by Charles II at his wedding in 1661 to Catherine of Braganza. The proposal for this tartan was put to John T Kerr of the St Andrews Society of N.C. and later to the St Andrews Society of Charleston SC. In conjunction with the Scottish Tartans Society the design was established in 1981. It was adopted by Cross Creek Pipe Band of Fayetteville in the 1980's and recorded as the official state tartan by state of North Carolina on May 9, 1991 and by the South Carolina General Assembly on June 3, 2002.
The Carolina tartan celebrates the strong Scottish ancestry of many Carolinian families. The Catawba Valley Scottish Society based in Huntersville NC and organizers of the Loch Norman Highland Games, adopted the tartan in the late 90’s.
