What kind of wool is it?

Our wool tartan is made of the finest, worsted wool. All the patterns that are featured on the page you just came from, are in stock and available by the yard or by the mile, and shipped direct from Fraser & Kirkbright Weavers, Ltd., in Canada.

Why 10.5oz. - why not something heavier?

The finest woollen tartan is made light, selvedged, and worsted. Our 10.5oz. wool tartan is 150 centimeters wide (slightly more than 59")and woven so tightly, they say it repels rain. Unless otherwise noted, all our wool is selvaged 10.5oz weight and is perfect for making a truly comfortable children's kilt, lovely sash, shirt, dress, or dance apparel. Our cotton tartan is also finest quality, selvedged and preshrunk

YES. We can supply heavier weight tartan and do carry several remnant patterns in 14oz. wool in stock. The ideal Men's kilt is made from 14oz Wool. We will also produce 16oz. wool tartan - often preferred for pipe band kilts - and a 19oz blanket weight - by special order - as well as cotton. Ten yard minimum

My source in Scotland says this is not real Scottish Tartan. What's up?

These are authentic tartans, truly woven in the Scottish fashion. The quality woollen yarn is dyed and vacuum dried. The Kirkbrights have been weavers in Vancouver for years, taking great pride in supplying a discerning market. Every yard is quality checked before shipping.

But don't the sheep have to be Scottish??

This is probably the biggest myth in modern tartan making, today. There is NO such thing as commercial Scottish tartan made from Scottish sheep. Except for wool-weaving hobbyists in Scotland, tartan made in Scotland, today, is made from the wool of Australian Merino sheep.

Why isn't this wool more expensive?

We'll be very happy to let you pay more, if you want. But, we strive to be very competitive.

What about the horror of shipping tartan from Scotland?

This one's simple to answer. The US and Great Britain are having a lover's spat and trade is the victim. Only printed matter isn't stopped at the border nowadays. So if you order anything but books and calendars from Scotland, be prepared to have it take over a month. That includes tartan. We've heard the horror stories, too, about tartan shipments being held up for two and three months and then having the purchaser have to pay another 100% in customs clearance charges. We ship from Canada. And, thanks to NAFTA, we rarely have any of those problems. However, import duties are the responsibility of the customer.

I can't sew worth a toot, what do I do?

We will put you in touch with an authentic Scottish kilt maker who also makes sashes and dancing attire. We know both lady gentleman kiltmakers whom we have found to be both scrupulous in detail and honest to work with. We will even ship your tartan to our kiltmaker, if you wish. But we recommend that you receive shipment, first, to make sure you have the right material in hand. Please visit our Clothing and Apparel page for items available in Lightweight Wool

I don't want to buy the material without first examining it close-up. What about it?

If you would like to see a sample of the 10.5oz. tartan you are considering, but want to hold it in your hands before buying a larger quantity, you can purchase Online a 6"x 8" swatch of material for $6.00US each (includes S&H).

Do I have to buy a gozillian yards at a time?

NO! All tartans shown can be purchase by the yard, right here, online, at The Scottish Weaver.com . And, of course, you can have your pattern woven to order in wool or cotton.

How long do I have to wait before receiving shipment?

Please allow 1 - 2 weeks for delivery of remnants, 6-8 for weave-to-order after final approval.

I didn't see my favorite clan tartan of the 40 you showed. What to do?

If you don't see your favorite tartan OR if you're looking for a heavier weight, simply send us a message. We will contact you within one business day. While we cannot promise that we will have your tartan in stock, we can make special arrangements for a special run. We will even set up a special run clan purchasing program. We can even design a tartan for special occasions.
