This name was originally taken from the “five-merk land” of Cochrane (earlier, Coueran) near Paisley in Renfrewshire. The first record concerns one Waldeve de Coueran who witnessed a charter in 1262. Widespread throughout the Lowlands, it appears in many spellings. The Cochrans, if not of the most distinguished families of Scotland, produce down the centuries men of substance and of sound repute, which is witnessed by the number of deeds to which they have put their name. Occasionally they show up in detailed history: Edward of Cochran being declared innocent of having part in the detention of James III, in 1482. It is possible that a family of MacEacherns, fleeing the Highlands, changed their name, for safety’s sake, to Cochran. But there is no real connection between the two names. Cochran, Cochrane and Cochren are alternative spellings.
