The Great Border Family of Elliot is mentioned in the 16th century as having as its Chiefly House the Elliots of Redheugh. Robert Elliot of Redheugh’s son, Elwold, fell at Flodden and his grandson became Captain of Hermitage Castle. The last of this line was Robert, accused, in 1624, of conspiracy against the Earl of Buccleuch. Since then, the outstanding branch has been the house of Stobs, deriving from Gawen Elliot of Stobbes. Of this line, Sir Gilbert, the 4th Baronet, was created Earl of Minto in 1751. The Elliots long distinguished themselves in imperial affairs and in the profession of Law. Sir William, 8th. Baronet of Stobs, was recognised in Lyon Court as Head of his Family. Its most distinguished soldier was General George Elliot, who defended Gibraltar against the combined forces of France and Spain in 1782
