"Son of Andrew"; or, more properly, "Son of St Andrew", as indicated by the Cross of St Andrew on the Family shield. The Gaelic equivalent of Anderson is Mac Aindrea or Gille Aindreis. The Highland Andersons were probably an offshoot of the Clan Ross, while, the MacAndrews are regarded as a sept of the Mackintoshes. Iain Beg MacAindreis, Little John MacAndrew, was a famous bowman of Dalnahatnich and noted for his exploits in defence of his kindsmen's cattle and gear.
