Details

The fortunes of this Family began when William the Lion rewarded with grants of land a Baird who had saved his life from a wild boar. Meikle and Little Kyp came to the Bairds by charter and Robert the Bruce granted the Barony of Cambusnethan to Robert Baird. The Family spread to Banffshire, and then to Auchmeddan in Aberdeenshire. General Sir David Baird, a soldier noted for his exploits in India, in the Cape of Good Hope and Copenhagen, took command at Corunna after the tragic death of Sir John Moore. The estate of Auchmeddan was bought by the Earl of Aberdeen, after which, as prophesised by Thomas the Rhymer, the eagles which nested in its crags, disappeared. They returned after the marriage of his heir to General Baird's sister and remained until the estate again passed to the Gordons, when once more they fled.
