"Watches" were a Highland system through which armed guards were raised by the Clan Chiefs to prevent cattle-lifting, but these were ultimately disarmed by General Wade. In line with this native tradition, the Government in 1729 raised four Independent Companies as part of the Armed Forces, to keep peace in the Highlands. These became a regiment in 1739 and were called in Gaelic "Am Freiceadan Dubh", "The Black Watch", from the dark tartan which they wore to distinguish them from the regular "Red Coats". This tartan may be in origin Campbell or, both tartans may go back on an earlier sett. The Regiment has had a long and distinguished history.
