The title ‘Earl of Buchan’ (one of the oldest in Scotland) was brought to the Comyns (Cummings) by an heiress but was forfeited with their possessions by their opposition to Bruce. The title was later given to James Stewart, son of Robert II. In 1689 General Thomas Buchan of Auchmacoy became commander of the Jacobite forces in Scotland, after the death of Bonnie Dundee at the Battle of Killiecrankie. He was defeated and his forces scattered. When James II realised his cause was lost, he invited General Buchan to join his court at St Germains. The General claimed – unsuccessfully – the title ‘Earl of Buchan’ but the family provide the Clan with its Chief. The present Chief, Captain David Buchan of Achmacoy, adopted the Hunting Cumming as its tartan, in the light of the Clan’s history.
