Details

The name Buchanan may be of ecclesiastical origin, since its Gaelic form is Mac-a-Chanonaich, Son of the Canon. The Clan lands by Loch Lomond are traditionally said to have been granted to the Buchanan chief by Malcolm II for services rendered against the Danes. Other tradition has it that the lands came by grant from the Earl of Lennox in the mid-thirteenth century. The Buchanans were supporters of the Bruce and formed part of the Scots contingent at Agincourt. Buchanan of Leny was killed at Flodden. The Chiefship is now dormant and most of the lands have passed to the Duke of Montrose
