This name comes from the Old English personal name of Boernheard, through the later Burnard. About the year 1200, Roger Burnard made two grants to the Monks of Melrose from his lands at Farengdun. Alexander Burnard, or Burnett, went north in the Train of Robert I and received lands on Deeside in the Forest of Drum, as well as the Barony of Tulliboyll in the sherrifdom of Kincardine. The family is still in possession of Crathes Castle, near to Drum. The Burnetts of Barns, who gave name to Burnetland in the Parish of Broughton, claimed descent from a Robertus de Burneville, who lived under David I.
