This Highland surname is said to come from the Gaelic Camshron, Crooked-Nose. The Clan consisted originally of the MacMartins of Letterfinlay, the MacGillonies of Strone and the MacSorleys of Glen Nevis. Eventually the chiefship passed to the Strone branch in the person of Cameron of Lochiel who obtained royal recognition a jurisdiction with the erection of the Barony of Lochiel, in 1528. The Camerons were staunch supporters of the Stuart kings, Sir Ewen fought at Killiecrankie and was knighted in 1680. He had never submitted to Cromwell. His grandson was “The Gentle Lochiel”, who led the Clan out in support of Prince Charles in 1745. The estates were forfeited, but restored in 1784. Achnacary Castle, though not the original stronghold of the Lochiels, which was on an island, by Annat, in Loch Eil, has long been the home of the Chief.
