Founder of this branch of the Clan Campbell was Sir John, 3rd son of the 2nd Earl of Argyll, who married in 1510, Muriel, daughter of the Thane of Cawdor. On her death, the Thanedom passed to her grandson, John, who sold the estates to purchase Islay. A Welsh marriage took the family south, and its head was eventually raised to the Peerage as Lord Cawdor of Castlemartin, Pembrokeshire, in 1796. In the following year this Baron took prisoner some 1200 French troops who had landed at Fishguard. The 2nd Baron Cawdor was created Earl of Cawdor in 1827. Cawdor Castle, built in the mid-sixteenth century, the residence of the Chief, is one of the finest inhabited castles in Scotland
