It was the proud boast of the Chiefs of Strathglass that the only three people were entitled to use the definite article before their titles: The King, The Pope and The Chisholm. The Chisholms, of Norman origin, reached Roxburghshire in the 13th century, The founder of the Clan was Robert de Chisholm. He went north and married the daughter of the Constable of Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness, himself later succeeding to that office. A subsequent Chisholm marriage with the Lady of Erchless brought the Erchless lands and castle to the Clan. The Chisholms were staunch Jacobites in the ´15 and the ´45 and fought at Culloden. After the battle, the Prince was sheltered in their cave by the Seven Men of Glenmoriston, one of whom was a Chisholm.
