This name is taken from the Barony of Colquhoun in Dunbartonshire, the Chief of the Clan is Colquhoun of Colquhoun and Luss and the Clan land lie on Loch Lomond-side. Robert de Colechon was probably the first to take the name from his land and is recorded at Dumbarton in 1259. The lands of Luss were added to the family by a marriage in mid-15th century. One of the most famous incidents and the greatest tragedy of the Clan's history was the defeat of Sir Humphrey, 12th Laird of Luss, at the hands of the fierce MacGregors, in Glenfruin in 1602. The son of this chief was made a Baronet of Nova Scotia by Charles I.
