Details

Descended from a Norman noble, the Cummings became powerful in Scotland. In the reign of Alexander III, there were three Cumming earls: Buchan, Menteith and Atholl. By a marriage with the sister of John Baliol, and descent from King Duncan, “The Red Comyn”, Lord of Badenoch, had strong claim to the Scottish crown. After the despatch of this man by the dagger of Robert the Bruce in the Church of the Minorities in Dumfries, the power of this branch of the Family was destroyed, and the Comyns of Altyre took the lead. Through marriage with the Gordons of Gordonstoun, the name Gordon-Cumming was adopted by the Altyre branch, now baronets of Gordonstoun.
