The Duncans and the Clann Donnachaidh appear to have the same origin. Both were descended from the ancient Earls of Athol and took their name from Donnachaidh Reamhar, Fat Duncan, who led the Clan at the Battle of Bannockburn. Duncans possessed the lands of Lundie in Fife. Alexander Duncan of Lundie was provost of Dundee and a Hanoverian supporter in 1745. His son, Adam, became the renowned Admiral who, in one of the hardest-fought naval battles in our annals, defeated the Dutch at Camperdown in 1797. His son was created Viscount Duncan of Camperdown in 1831. Many of the name of Duncan today are descendants of Clan Robertson whose ancestors, after The ’45, for the sake of safety, were forced to change their name.
