The Clan Forbes takes its name from the Parish of Forbes in Aberdeenshire. In 1303, during the war of Independence, Alexander Forbes was killed defending Urquhart Castle against Edward I, while in 1332, his son fell at the Battle of Dupplin. In 1442 his grandson was created Baron Forbes. The present seat of Lord Forbes, Chief of the Clan, is Castle Forbes, Aberdeenshire. One of the outstanding branches of this family were the Forbes of Culloden. Duncan Forbes, Laird of Culloden, was Lord President of the Court of Session at the time of the Forty-Five and used his powerful influence to block the Prince’s cause. Another famous old branch is that of the Forbes Baronets of Craigievar, Aberdeenshire. Their original stronghold was Druminnor, near Rhynie.
