This name appears to have two origins; the first, from some place, location unknown, the second, from an old Gaelic personal name, Fearsithe, or Man of Peace. About 1308, Robert the Bruce gave to “Osbert Filius Forsyth” a grant of a hundred shillings land in the tenement of Salakhill, (now Sauchie) in the sheriffdom of Stirling. Another Forsyth received a grant of land, also near Stirling, from Robert II, while in 1368, “Fersith” is recorded as Constable of Stirling Castle. From the evidence of our records, this name appears to have been widely spread throughout the Lowlands of Scotland. 49 / 352 FORSYTH
