This name is said to derive from the Seigneurie of Freselière in Anjou. Simon Fraser, whose gift to the Abbey of Kelso is dated 1160, is the first of his line to be recorded. Of the Highland Frasers, the founder was Sir Andrew, who acquired lands in Inverness-shire through his wife, heiress of Lovat. His far descendent, Simon, Lord Lovat, a man of many gifts who betrayed both sides during the Rising of 1745, was executed and his title attainted. A new peerage, however, was created in 1887, when Fraser of Strichen became Baron Lovat. The main arms and chiefship are borne by the Frasers of Saltoun, whose seat is Cairnbulg Castle, Aberdeenshire. Lord Lovat, at Beaufort Castle, remains Chief of the Frasers of Lovat.
